The widely used software development platform GitHub, which forms an essential part of Microsoft’s developer network, has declared major changes to its pricing and access structure for its well-known AI coding assistant GitHub Copilot. GitHub announced this past Friday that a new system of “premium requests” has been launched, which will affect users who exploit the tool’s advanced features. The system will implement monthly usage caps on AI model access beyond the fundamental service for complex coding tasks, including “agentic” coding where AI autonomously generates code and multi-file editing. Users who depend heavily on Copilot’s advanced AI models may face higher expenses due to the new premium request system.
All subscribers can use GitHub Copilot’s basic functions powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o without any usage limits, but those accessing advanced models like Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet will face monthly usage restrictions. As of May 5th, GitHub will enforce a 300 premium request monthly limit for developers who subscribe to the standard Copilot Pro plan, which costs $20 per month. Copilot Business users will benefit from 300 premium requests per user monthly, and enterprise clients who subscribe to the Copilot Enterprise plan will enjoy a higher quota of 1,000 premium requests per user. The Business and Enterprise tier users will experience these changes starting from May 12th until May 19th.
GitHub created support mechanisms to assist users and teams who need more extensive access to advanced AI models due to higher usage demands. Customers who subscribe to any of these impacted plans may buy extra premium requests at $0.04 each. Users who face sporadic increases in their demand for advanced AI services can benefit from this adaptable pay-as-you-go system. GitHub now offers Copilot Pro+ as its latest higher-tier subscription plan, which comes at a monthly cost of $39. The premium service now allows subscribers to make up to 1,500 premium requests monthly and provides access to OpenAI’s awaited GPT-4.5 of the best available models. Copilot Pro+ will serve power users and organizations who require top-tier AI features for their software development projects.
Copilot recently modified its pricing for advanced AI models following a comparable announcement by AI coding platform Devin that raised rates for certain users. The simultaneous emergence of pricing adjustments in AI-assisted development tools shows a strong indication of industry growth driven by the need for extensive computational resources, which make operating advanced AI systems expensive. Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet reasoning-centric models enhance coding task accuracy and reliability through advanced contextual understanding but require increased processing power and time, which raises operational costs for service providers. GitHub’s premium request system functions as a strategic measure to connect the access costs of advanced AI models with actual resource consumption while ensuring service sustainability through a tiered model that meets varied user demands.
This premium request system represents a significant advancement in GitHub’s Copilot monetization approach. Access to the basic AI model features remains unlimited, but the latest structure creates a direct cost association with the use of its most powerful features. This change will likely lead users to examine how much they depend on advanced AI models while reconsidering their development processes. Developers and development teams should evaluate if the advanced features of models like 3.7 Sonnet for agentic coding and multi-file edits are worth the extra expenses from surpassing premium request limits or needing to move to a superior plan. All subscribers benefit from the unlimited usage of the base model for simple coding tasks, while premium requests and the Copilot Pro+ plan serve advanced AI support needs for complex project requirements.
GitHub Copilot stands as a successful, rapidly expanding element of Microsoft’s product range even after implementing usage-based pricing for its premium models. In August of the prior year, Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, disclosed that GitHub’s revenue growth in 2024 saw Copilot contribute over 40%. Nadella emphasized Copilot’s massive user adoption by pointing out that its present business volume already exceeds the total revenue GitHub generated when Microsoft purchased it seven years ago. The impressive expansion demonstrates how developers are increasingly dependent on AI-powered coding tools for their work. The implementation of premium requests serves as a strategic enhancement to the monetization model that supports ongoing growth while meeting the advanced needs of a diverse user base as AI software development technology evolves. The tiered system delivers multiple options to users at different demand levels for advanced AI features while maintaining a balanced pricing structure that matches both the value delivered and the computational costs of various AI service levels.
