Strange New Worlds Season 3: Kirk’s Turn at the Helm

Paramount+ has released the first official trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. It’s set to premiere on July 17, 2025, after only releasing a teaser trailer back in April. The studio released a new set of pictures around the same time.

Season 2 of Strange New Worlds concluded with a major cliffhanger: with their invasion of a Federation colony world, the Enterprise became the target of a brutal Gorn attack. The Gorn abduct several crew members (along with other survivors from the colony) and force Pike to choose between Starfleet orders (abandon the colony and leave) or pursue a rescue mission.

Captain Pike (Anson Mount), of course, refuses to back down from a fight, and the trailer’s dialogue gives the feeling that Season 3 will pick up from there and continue that particular arc. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds shared footage of the new season back in October during New York City Comic-Con. It features the same rescue and space battle that had become a series trademark as the Enterprise crew takes on the Gorn yet again.

The new trailer reiterates that promise: apparently, the season will bring an end to the conflict and offer new dangers and, of course, new worlds for the crew to explore. Although they will face the Gorn one last time, the season is promising new challenges that will test the crew’s resolve and character in more ways than one.

And while Pike’s Enterprise will be at the center of action this time, the new trailer also promises new facets of character development. There will be a new villain in season 3, to be sure, but there will also be several episodes that eschew straight adventure in favor of stories focused on themes of faith, duty, romance, and comedy.

Paramount+ also shared that the storytelling will include genre shifts that have been previously unseen in Star Trek productions. Aside from the returning main and recurring cast members, season 3 has seen the addition of several new players. One of the most noteworthy additions to the cast is Cillian O’ Sullivan, who will be joining as Dr. Roger Korby.

In Strange New Worlds, Korby is a renowned archaeologist whose field of specialization is medical archaeology. He is also Nurse Christine Chapel’s (Jess Bush) missing fiancé and was brought on set as a legacy character from Star Trek: The Original Series. Portrayed by Michael Strong in the episode “Obsession,” Korby’s storyline has seen some retconning with Strange New Worlds: Chapel has been shown to move on in the form of a relationship with Spock (Ethan Peck).

Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt will also be guest-starring in this season, and both are known for their work in comedy. The teaser from April heavily teases this genre variety of episodes, with clips of action, intrigue, side-splitting banter, and the crew having a bit of fun in lighter, more comedic stories.

The new trailer lives up to that promise, showing some lighter, more personal moments in between the larger action beats. This includes the crew casually having a good time, some relatively tender romantic moments, and even a couple of more humorous beats.

In one of these scenes, a green-tinged substance from an experiment gone awry gets all over Spock’s hand. The latter then takes it upon himself to teach a Vulcan character portrayed by Oswalt to high-five, first with a normal one and then apparently in the more humiliating “too slow” pose when asked to do a “down low” shot. “Why would you do that?” the Vulcan asks. “Because you are too slow,” deadpans Spock.

As noted above, the other scene shared at the end of the trailer is more important for the implications than the action: it features James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) in the captain’s chair in command of the Enterprise. The new trailer doesn’t make it clear how this happens, but Kirk’s time on the bridge will be important to him in the long term.

“It’s easy to put on the uniform,” Pike says, “but the choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.” The episode has not been shared, but Kirk’s involvement, albeit in a limited way, is sure to be crucial to Strange New Worlds season 3.
