Former President Weighs Clemency for Sean Combs
The name Donald Trump continues to reverberate through the streets due to another curious statement that the former president of the United States made about the “pending” case of Sean “Diddy” Combs. On Friday, August 1, Trump was asked on Newsmax’s Finnerty if he would pardon Combs, who was convicted last month.
Combs, founder of the record label Bad Boy Records, was found guilty in early July of one federal charge of transportation with the intent to engage in prostitution. He was acquitted of three other charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. The case, which involved weeks of testimonies and controversies, began with singer Cassie Ventura’s accusations of abuse and trafficking against Combs during a past relationship. However, Combs has denied all the allegations.
Asked whether Trump would pardon Combs, the Republican said, “Well, he was essentially, I guess, sort of half-innocent.” The former president added a mix of ambiguity and levity. “He’s still in jail or something, but he was celebrating a victory. But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory,” Trump added.
Commenting on the nature of their relationship, Trump said that he and Combs were friends before he went into politics. “We were very friendly. I got along with him great,” Trump said, adding that the dynamic between them changed when he began his political career. “He used to like me a lot. I think when I ran for politics, that relationship busted up. … I would certainly look at the facts. If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”
Past Interview and Current Reflections
This is not the first time Trump has raised the possibility of a pardon for Combs. In May, during a press conference in the Oval Office, the former president was asked by Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy if he would pardon Combs. At the time, Trump promised to “look at the facts” before making any decision. In his response to Doocy, he said that he would never allow personal considerations to “impact [him] at all.”
“I haven’t spoken to him in years,” Trump told Doocy. “He was very friendly at one point, but you know, at one point, I haven’t spoken to him in a long time. But if I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”
Combs was sentenced to ten years’ probation in a previous case, but is expected to be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison after his July conviction. He will be sentenced on October 3. The charges against the American rapper and record producer are connected to a federal investigation that led to the previous conviction.
The trial, which included his July conviction and previous cases, has generated new debates around justice for celebrities, the powers of the presidency, and how personal connections might or might not influence clemency for convicted persons. Trump’s new public comments regarding Combs add yet another layer to that narrative. The former president, who has had a strained relationship with Combs, continued to say that he would like to weigh the case.
“He was celebrating a victory,” Trump remarked on the Newsmax program. “But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory.”
A clip of the full video of Trump’s comments from the Finnerty program has been shared on X (formerly Twitter), with many responding with various comments. For now, only time will tell if Trump will follow through on his comments about granting clemency to Combs. But, in the meantime, both hip-hop fans and presidential politics continue to engage in a new discussion about the case.
For now, the date for Combs’ sentencing on October 3 is just around the corner. Speculation over whether or not Trump will pardon the rapper remains alive and buzzing.
