Bryan Kohberger, who was convicted in April of killing four University of Idaho students in an off-campus home invasion in 2022, has filed multiple notes from prison that he is being threatened and harassed by inmates, according to documents. The 30-year-old, who was a Ph.D. criminology student at the time of the murders, is serving a life sentence without parole at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution and has requested to be moved to a different housing wing.

In a string of handwritten notes first obtained by People, Kohberger claimed he has been receiving “minute-by-minute” verbal harassment from fellow inmates since being placed in a prison housing unit known as J Block, which is typically reserved for the prison’s high-risk and high-profile inmates. Death row inmates also live in J Block.

In the documents, Kohberger explained that after being placed in J Block, he received graphic threats from other prisoners. In one instance, he wrote one unnamed inmate told him, “I’ll b— f— you,” while another said, “The only a– we’ll be eating is Kohberger’s.”

He claimed the inmate threats started two days after he was moved into J Block. In a handwritten note to prison officials less than a week later, Kohberger wrote he wanted to be transferred to another unit called B Block because it is a quieter area and he can “sit and think.” “Tier 2 of J Block is an environment that I wish to transfer from if possible,” Kohberger wrote in his request. “I request transfer to B Block immediately. I wish to speak with you soon.”

Kohberger, who has claimed he has not been involved in typical prison misconduct like “flooding” or “striking,” also made it clear that he believes his treatment in J Block is unwarranted and has asked for a new housing assignment, according to the documents. Guards confirmed that they heard inmates using vulgar language and threatening Kohberger. One guard, however, could not recall the specific threats.

State prison officials have not said whether Kohberger would be moved and this week he was still listed as being in J Block. The Idaho Department of Correction did not respond to People’s request for comment.

The harassment against Kohberger didn’t start in state prison. Shortly after he was sent to a county jail in 2022 for his initial court proceedings related to the murders, Kohberger was also mocked there by inmates, including during a video call he was having with his mother, according to court filings. One inmate, while Kohberger was talking to his mother, yelled, “F— his face!” and “T–hole’s a –ed killer!”

In court filings during the trial, Kohberger was described as having a “piercing stare” and that he “lacks social awareness and [has] awkward behavior.” One inmate in the county jail even called Kohberger a “f—ing weirdo.” Another wrote in court documents that he thought he should have attacked Kohberger but “knew better.”

His experience at the county jail, while just a small window into prison life for Kohberger, is a foreboding sign, experts say. “High-profile offenders nearly always draw hostility,” a prison consultant told People in January. “For Kohberger, his personality and notoriety put an even bigger target on his back.”

Kohberger has reportedly lost weight during his time in prison over the past 2½ years. He has been housed at Idaho’s most secure facility with some of the state’s most notorious killers, including Chad Daybell, who is on death row for the murders of his wife and two girls. Kohberger’s treatment has quickly become menacing in the prison community and experts fear his experience there will be similar to that of Jeffrey Dahmer, who was harassed and ultimately killed by an inmate in 1994 while he was in prison. The 30-year-old still remains in J Block under maximum supervision and his notes may or may not lead to another housing unit. But the threats he faces while in prison for the rest of his life are almost guaranteed, sources say.
